Patbingsu has sweet red bean paste and tons of mochi (a Japanese rice cake that resembles gummy candy). What’s not to like? This desert is HUGE, big enough for lunch or to share with several friends, plus it comes with a free small cup of fro-yo. Apparently the dish is traditionally eaten with ice cream in Korea, and fro-yo is the closest thing they have. The freebie also helps soften the $8 price (it’s worth it anyway).
If you’re still unsure what Patbingsu is, the layers are (from bottom): a little cream, a lot of shaved ice, a sprinkling of a powder that resembles wheat germ, a thick layer of sweet red bean paste, heaps of fruit, a generous dose of mochi and, if desired, a drizzle of chocolate sauce.
We have to admit, we almost brushed this place off as just another frozen yogurt shop in the Asian Yogurt Invasion. The yogurt itself is unmemorable. It’s fat free and has 25 calories per ounce. But why bother when you could be trying Patbingsu?
Not in Murray Hill? They’ve also got locations in Jackson Heights, Bayside, Sunnyside, Williamsburg, Brooklyn Heights and Staten Island. Unfortunately, not all locations offer Patbingsu.
