For those who want to enjoy their ice cream and look good in skinny jeans, too...
Frozen Yogurt
We compared five frozen yogurts (plain flavor without toppings) by nutrition and flavor, as judged in blind taste tests by the official scooponcones tasting panel. Here are the results, in order from best tasting to worst:
The taste winner:
1) Our panel found Pinkberry to be tart and thick, with a nice dense texture. Two testers even picked up a hint of mint. Pinkberry has slightly more calories per ounce than the other samples, but we think it’s worth it.
Pinkberry had to “adjust” it’s nutritional info last year, to learn more click here
2) Next in line was Forty Carrots, which is found in Bloomingdale’s and is known as one of the original tart yogurts in the City. Actually, it was the sweetest of the bunch. It was whipped airier, too.
3) We sampled the “berry smooth,” which is creamier than Berrywild’s “kinda icy” option. It was pleasant, but didn’t stand out as anybody’s favorite.
4) This was a huge surprise given the buzz around Red Mango: It’s gross. Really gross. It tastes like soured cheese, in a pukey sort of way, according to our panel. (We do, however, like their pumpkin flavor.)
5) Only 8 is found in bodegas, and was the biggest disappointment. Our testers thought it tasted like a snow cone with milk poured on top, with a distinct finish of cardboard. It’s also misleading: the 8 in Only 8 refers to the number of ingredients. And one of the ingredients is “natural flavors & stabilizers” -- that sounds like more than one to us. Bottom line: don’t be fooled into thinking you’re getting a low-cal treat, it’s not significantly lower in calories than the other options and it’s definitely not a treat.
At a glance:
All of the nutritional information comes from the manufacturers. Scooponcones.com converted each into a 5 oz. serving, which we believe is more reflective of an actual serving size. We threw in a regular ice cream, Ben & Jerry’s Vanilla, just for comparison.
