We don’t particularly like giving bad reviews, so we tried this goat ice cream twice over several months to give it a second chance, but it still fell short.
Sadly, Patches of Start Dairy goat ice cream is really icy and has a bad aftertaste -- one tester described it as “goaty.”
It’s actually much lighter than regular ice cream, because it’s made from whole milk instead of cream. But the lightness is combined with an icy texture, closer to an Italian ice than ice cream. And the peanut butter chocolate chip has a weird aftertaste. If it were a blind test, we’d guess it was diet ice cream.
The Black Raspberry had a very mild berry flavor, followed by that “goaty-ness.”
The milk comes from a farm in Pennsylvania with about 150 goats. The ice cream is available at the Union Square Farmer’s Market every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Goat ice cream: Interesting in concept, but kind of gross on execution
