Homer’s Blue Donkey - scooponcones.com
A few things are confusing about this kid-friendly soda shop:
_ The name; it says Homer’s Blue Donkey Grill on the sign outside, Blue Donkey Grill on its website, and Homer’s Famous Soda Shop on the receipt.
_ The menu; although they have tons of great ice cream flavors, none are listed on the menu.
Aside from that, Homer’s, er, Blue Donkey serves some tasty ice cream. It’s not made in house (the waitress told us it’s Baskin-Robbins), but it is smooth and creamy and delicious. They make a darn good sundae, with toppings including crushed sugar cones and Nerds candies.
Our 11-year-old kid tester is very picky about her Mint Chocolate Chip and gave this a thumbs up. The Birthday Cake flavor, with sprinkles mixed in, was also a hit.
The other draw here are the arcade games, from Ms. Pacman to Guitar Hero. They proved irresistible.
The decor is kind of dingy, but with two flat-screen TVs tuned into a football game and beer on tap, it seems like an ideal Upper West Side spot for dads to take their tykes.
