Forty Carrots - scooponcones.com
The tart yogurt craze is often associated with Pinkberry, but generations of New York women know it started in 1975 in a cafe in Bloomingdales.
Called Forty Carrots, the shop on the seventh floor sells tart frozen yogurt in plain and a few other flavors (Carribean Coffee and Mango when we visited), with a wide selection of toppings. The yogurt itself is tart, but not shockingly so, and blends well with fruit flavors.
The servings are pricy (what did you expect at Bloomies?) but also generous. A small could easily serve two people who still want to fit into the jeans they just bought. We enjoyed the Melba Sauce, which is a raspberry puree. Other interesting toppings include Wildflower Honey and Chocolate Covered Gogi Berries.
Hours: Closes a half hour before the store
Price: $4.50 small, dry toppings $1, fruit toppings $2
Special Diets: Plain yogurt is low calorie (25 calories per ounce); flavored yogurts are nonfat
