For those who have not yet been indoctrinated, a cholado is a tropical frozen desert from Colombia that includes strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, coconut, banana, shaved ice, sweetened condensed milk and a cherry on top.

It is fantastic, refreshing and surprisingly creamy. It’s also totally worth a trip out to Jackson Heights to experience.

There are other places to get a cholado than this kind of dingy walk-up counter, but judging from the steady stream of customers that braved a torrential rainstorm to get one, we think it’s a good sample.
