This bright gelato shop in Nolita is the smallest of four storefronts in the city for Ciao Bella, which was created in Little Italy in 1983 and is now widely available in grocery stores and restaurants.

The Malted Milk Balls flavor wasn’t anything special. But the Turkish Pistachio was really great, it had whole, big pistachios in a mild creamy gelato base. It in no way resembles the green-food coloring that most people pass off for pistachio.

The shop is a cute walk-up stand with no seating but the sidewalk outside has some seating around a tree. We like the mural outside.

But we don’t like this gelato because it has a weird gooey consistency, and stretches like mozzarella cheese between the dish and spoon. This gelato didn’t start out with the melted mozzarella problem, but as it warmed up a little in the cup it developed it.  Apparently it happens at certain temperatures?

Not in the Nolita? They also have shops in Upper East Side, Grand Central, and the World Financial Center.
